Vedder River

We have had a fantastic February for steel head fishing. Numerous anglers have caught hatchery fish on their first year of steel heading. Currently, the Vedder is low and clear so it would be advised to downsize your tackle. This can be done by using smaller hooks like a #1 or #2 single barbless hook accompanied with a smaller presentation such as 10 mm soft or hard bead. On April 1st the upper portion of the Vedder closes, this is any areas above Tamihi bridge. Get out there and enjoy what our local fishery has to offer!

Saltwater Report

Our local winter feeder spring fishery has been excellent. Our staff has been fishing Howesound and the Harbour with sucess. There has also been multiple reports of fish being caught in the Gulf Islands, such as Porier pass, Thrasher Rock,  and Entrance Island. Unfortunately, this fishery shuts right down on March 31st, so get out there while you can ! During this time of year fish are usually found near the bottom chasing big balls of bait. But as the water starts to warm up, the bait and springs start to suspend so covering all areas of the water column is advised. Hoochies and spoons are your best lure options for this time of year due to the depths you are fishing at. Using bait such as anchovies or herring can also be a nice option. Make sure to charge your lures with a light before sending them down to ensure the fish can see them. Crabbing in the harbour has been excellent, with multiple reports of catching limits and prawning has been consistent throughout howesound. Head out there to enjoy our beautiful spring weather !
